Schöne Neue Welt

In a blend of documentary and metaphorical photography, the photos are a venture into unravelling how the realities and the background of everyday life are constructed between converging notions of perceived societal normality and individually framed/arranged desires, hopes and aspirations.

The project is inspired by Aldous Huxley’s utopia Brave New World (in German: Schöne Neue Welt) and the photos were taken in the suburbs of Tokyo – a metropolis that itself has inspired a great number of science fiction movies. The countless suburbs consist of both old neighborhoods that got engulfed by the growing greater metropolitan area and new residential areas with prefabricated houses, “beautiful” little homes that all look the same and seem to come right out of a picture book.

The pictures are fragments and snapshots of everyday objects and everyday experiences, where reality seems a little twisted.
